Our Pittsboro facility produces high-strength round steel bars and round-cornered squares. These high-alloy and special-bar-quality (SBQ) steels are employed in rotating machinery and transportation applications and in energy and marine applications.
SBQ is a category of steel bar products that are manufactured with tighter chemical, mechanical, and surface-quality controls than standard merchant bar quality (MBQ). SBQ steels are engineered for demanding, high-performance applications where consistency, strength, toughness, machinability, and defect-free structure are critical.
We also offer a wide range of bar-finishing and testing services that include straightening, turning, and polishing, plus precision saw cutting, heat treating, and non-destructive eddy-current and roto-bar testing.
The 200-acre Engineered Bar Products Division campus sits along Interstate 74 just west of Indianapolis. The mill itself is a 740,000-square-foot structure and its support facilities includes a precision sizing mill that enables the production of smaller-diameter SBQ concurrently with the production of larger-diameter SBQ. With an annual production capacity of 950,000 tons, the Engineered Bar Products Division is among the largest single-site SBQ facilities in North America.
SBQ steels are commonly used as automotive parts, such as gears, shafts, and axles, as well as in components in aerospace and defense, oil and gas, heavy equipment, and off-highway machinery.
Whether being employed to strengthen engine parts, suspension systems, bulldozer tracks, oil-drilling equipment, home-appliance components, munitions casings, or hand tools, our SBQ products are engineered to meet—and often surpass—the most exacting metallurgical and processing standards set by each individual customer, all of whom require the highest-grade carbon and alloy steel bars.
Round bars are most frequently used to make parts—such as gears, shafts, axles, and flywheels—for rotating machinery applications. We also engineer and produce round bars for the manufacturing of seamless pipe and tubing used in oil drilling, military, and other applications.
Round bars having diameters from 7/8" to 9" are produced in standard lengths and are available in a wide range of grades. Round-cornered squares are available in dimensions ranging from 3 to 8 inches in standard lengths. We also produce reinforcing bars No. 4 through No. 18 on a limited basis.
Intermediate and metric sizes can be produced provided certain minimum quantities are met.

Our 200-acre campus includes a free-standing 150,000-square-foot bar-finishing facility that offers customers a wide range of value-added services such as heat treatment, straightening, turning and polishing, bar inspection, and precision cutting. The bar-finishing facility has the capacity to process 300,000 tons of bars annually.
